Technical Survey of Simply-Connected Innovative Confinement Concepts

Abstract Text:
This paper is the final section of the ICC Roadmap, which became the ‘Technical Survey’ of Innovative Confinement Concepts, after the APS meeting in 2005 [1]. The scope of the work was reduced after community input to entail only simply-connected concepts. The work has been presented in various guises, for example, at the Global Climate and Energy Project meeting in Princeton [2] and at the Fusion Power Assosciates annual meeting on Capitol Hill, Washington DC [3]. The work has been extended to include not only an outline of the simply connected concepts, but also to include an overview of the physics of each concept, and a summary of the reactor visions that have appeared in literature over the last 20 years. The work also entails the motivational statements for pursuing more innovative fusion concepts (in terms of cost, size and complexity, and in terms of delivering value science). The other section of the Technical Survey will appear in the special edition of the Journal of Fusion Energy, which summarizes the history of planning documents produced in the US fusion program over the last 15 years relating to concept innovation [4].
