Abstract Text:
We present a PIC based impurity model to be implemented in the hybrid kinetic-MHD (HK-MHD) module ("PoP v15, 072507 (2008)") in NIMROD ("JCP v195, 355 (2004)"). The HK-MHD model captures the kinetic effects (of energetic ions) left out of the usual MHD equations. We will present an overview of the HK-MHD capabilities in NIMROD: including drift kinetic and Lorentz force equations of motion, full-f and delta-f capabilities, pressure and current coupling options, as well as the ability to simulate multiple species and interface with advanced diagnostics (https://www.youtube.com/user/charlsonification). We will then outline FAR-TECH, Inc.'s suite of numerical tools that are routinely used to simulate charge breeding in ion sources used in heavy ion accelerators. These Monte Carlo (MC) based subroutines model ionization, recombination, charge exchange, and Coulomb collisions and are designed for use in PIC simulations. We conclude by presenting our proposal and some preliminary results for incorporating the FAR-TECH MC collision subroutines into the equations of motion in the HK-MHD module and computing impurity particle moments (e.g. pressure) to close the NIMROD equations.
